Phoenix Foundation
DHA established the Phoenix Self-Sufficiency Foundation in 1996 to encourage residents to further their education in college, trade or technical school. The mission is to provide financial assistance
to DHA residents who are high school graduates or older students who choose college, trade or technical school. Many of the participating residents simply need a boost to help them pursue their
educational goals, obtain a better paying job and reach self-sufficiency and economic independence.
The foundation provides three types of scholarships:
The CRYSTAL Awards Scholarship is for current high school and General Education Development (GED) students who are under 19 years of age.
The Phoenix Fund Scholarship is awarded to students who have completed one year of college, vocational or technical school.
The Phoenix Rising Award is for non-traditional students who may not have attended an institution of higher learning immediately following high school graduation or upon receiving their GED.
Success Stories
The program is filled with success stories, such as DHA resident LaQuandra Brown, whose scholarship allowed her to complete her graduate and undergraduate degrees. In 2000, Brown earned a bachelor
of science from Tulane University and in 2005, obtained a juris doctor from The University of Texas in Austin.
Winning a CRYSTAL award scholarship helped Amber Sarpy realize her dream of attending Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Celebrating Success and more
DHA is fulfilling its mission of providing housing and housing assistance for low-to-moderate income families. The Phoenix Self-Sufficiency Foundation is striving to go beyond that mission and
encourage residents to have a better quality of life.
In 2005, the foundation awarded nearly $70,000 in scholarships to DHA residents. The foundation has donated more than $300,000 in scholarships since 1997.
